20 The health and safety responsibilities of self, employer and workers

Health and safety is a shared responsibility between employers, workers, and the self. All three parties have roles to play in ensuring a safe workplace environment.

As an individual in the workplace, I am also responsible for my safety and that of others and this includes recognising hazards in the workplace as well as understanding how to protect myself from them. This can involve everything from reading safety instructions before attempting to use any new machinery or equipment to wearing appropriate personal protective gear when necessary (such as gloves). Additionally, each individual should always report unsafe conditions if they encounter them so that corrective action can be taken quickly.

The employer’s responsibility includes providing information about the hazards that exist in the workplace as well as any measures they must take to protect their employees from them. Employers must ensure that all necessary health and safety equipment is provided for each job task; they are also responsible for training their employees on how to safely use this equipment. Furthermore, employers should make sure that everyone follows procedures related to occupational health, such as reporting accidents or injuries promptly, so appropriate action can be taken quickly.

Workers are responsible for adhering to all established workplace rules when it comes to their health and safety practices – this means following protocols relating to general procedures (such as proper attire) and specific tasks (like wearing goggles during certain activities). Workers need alert management if hazardous materials appear unexpectedly or anything else appears unsafe, which may include alerting a supervisor or another person in authority.

Health and safety responsibilities are shared between employers, workers and self: employers must provide training on proper procedures; workers must adhere to these rules, while individuals need to recognise potential risks in the environment around them and do what they can to minimise those risks. Ultimately everyone has a part to play when it comes to keeping work areas safe for all involved.
