1.1 Identify the different reasons people communicate.
Communication fulfils a range of purposes, especially within the field of adult care. Expressing needs and preferences stands out as the foundational reason individuals convey their thoughts. Caregivers must understand what those they are looking after require on a personal level as well as what brings them comfort or distress (Jones & Bartlett Learning, 2016).
Additionally, communication serves to establish relationships. Through interactive exchanges between caregivers and clients, bonds of trust are nurtured, easing cooperative efforts (Perry et al., 2018). When people share information about themselves and engage in listening to others, it bridges gaps and constructs a mutual understanding.
A third motive involves the exchange of information—a procedural aspect where care professionals discuss care plans and make informed decisions regarding an individual’s health status (Booth et al., 2021). This can include alerting family members about changes in treatment or discussing symptoms that need attention with other healthcare staff.
Also, communication acts as a medium for emotional expression. Being able to articulate joys and sorrows helps maintain mental well-being. For individuals in adult care settings, being heard and acknowledged can be incredibly empowering; it reinforces personal dignity (National Institute on Aging [NIA], n.d.).
