1.1 Explain what is meant by:

  • personal wellbeing

  • self-care

  • resilience

Personal well-being can be explained holistically as an individual’s state of health, happiness, and contentment. It encompasses the physical, emotional, and social aspects that contribute to one’s overall sense of life satisfaction (Diener et al., 2009). Personal well-being is dynamic—shifting with life circumstances—and thus requires active engagement to maintain or enhance personal satisfaction.

Self-care is a practice individuals engage in on their own behalf to manage stressors in life; this includes activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health (Stewart & Betson, 2020). Self-care is fundamental for maintaining personal welfare because it entails recognizing when your resources are running low and deliberately taking steps to replenish them—be it through restful sleep patterns or engaging in recreational activities.

Resilience embodies the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; it’s nurturing one’s inner strength to adaptively overcome obstacles faced (American Psychological Association [APA], 2014). An essential trait for those navigating through adversity—it allows individuals to not just survive but also grow from experiences.

For a holistic view of well-being: all three constituents need balance—with resilience acting as the buffer during adverse times while self-care strategies ensure optimal sustainment of one’s state—that is personal well-being.

Resilient individuals tend to exhibit effective self-care strategies which help them overcome hardships more readily, suggesting robust interconnectivity between these concepts.
