1.1 Define person centred practice

Person-centred practice is an approach that prioritises the individual receiving care, putting them at the centre of all decisions and choices relating to their care needs. This means taking into account factors such as their beliefs, abilities, preferences and wishes in order to provide tailored support that empowers them to take control of their own life.

Using a person-centred approach, care workers would communicate effectively with individuals accessing services, involving them in every aspect of decision-making surrounding care provision.

Furthermore, adopting this way of working requires having genuine compassion towards service users. Creating opportunities for self-care management, where applicable, helps create lasting improvements rather
