1.1 Explain what is meant by:

  • personal wellbeing

  • self-care

  • resilience

Personal wellbeing is a concept that takes into consideration the comprehensive condition of an individual’s life across the board, particularly in terms of their mental, physical, and emotional health. In essence, this fully implies that one’s personal wellbeing cannot simply be viewed merely as the absence of physical illness or distress of the mind but as a rather more complex circumstance where an individual realises their own abilities, and can cope with normal stresses of life, works productively and fruitfully, and is able to give back to their community (WHO, n.d.,).

Self-care, on the other hand, refers to the practices individuals undertake on their own behalf to maintain personal health and well-being. This might include adequate sleep, nutrition, regular exercise, stress management techniques, as well as meaningful social interaction. Riegel et al. (2017) note that self-care behaviours are essential for ongoing wellness and play a significant role in preventing chronic diseases.

Resilience speaks to one’s capacity to bounce back from adversity; it involves enduring difficulties with tenacity and adapting positively in response to challenging circumstances (Southwick & Charney 2012). Resilient individuals use resources both within themselves and from their environment not merely to survive hardships but also to potentially emerge stronger than before.

The intertwining relationships between these three aspects are paramount for holistic health. While personal wellbeing lays out the ideal states we strive towards; self-care represents our engagement in activities that directly support this goal; resilience equips us with the mental fortitude needed when obstacles arise on our journey toward optimal wellness.

It must be noted that striking a balance between maintaining robust personal wellbeing through active self-care practices while also nurturing resilience against external stresses requires both commitment and knowledge – managing all three effectively grants an elevated quality of life (Stewart & Joines 2002).
