1.1 Explain the relationship between identity, self-image and self-esteem, and the impact on an individual’s wellbeing

Fully understanding the interconnection between identity, self-image, and self-esteem is crucial in comprehending their collective impact on an individual’s wellbeing.

Identity forms the bedrock of our very existence—encompassing who we are and the roles we occupy within society. It’s a label affixed to us, often serving as a social passport.

One’s self-image, meanwhile, is the personal reflection of this identity; it is how an individual perceives themselves—a mirror reflecting back attitudes about body image, abilities, values, and worth (Rosenberg, 1979).

Closely knit with self-image is self-esteem, which refers to one’s evaluation of their own worth—with high or low estimations influencing life satisfaction levels significantly (Branden, 1994). A positive self-image typically fosters higher self-esteem; inversely a negative treatment can diminish it.

These elements exert a profound influence on overall wellbeing as addressed in care support services scenarios. When individuals lose sight of their value or are positioned outside community interaction spheres—their mental health suffers contraction—a phenomenon well-documented by clinical studies (Maslow, 1981; Baumeister & Leary, 1995).

The principles outlined in the Care Act 2014 offer a constructive framework for safeguarding wellbeing by prioritising aspects such as respect for personal dignity and autonomy (Department of Health & Social Care). Encouraging participation in diverse activities—from employment to recreation—strengthens social connections that fuel better mental health outcomes.
