Refective Account: Promote Personal Development in Care Settings

Introduction

As a professional working in a care home, I must reflect on my practice and understanding of the relevant standards for delivering quality service. To do this, I have chosen to use Kolb’s method, which provides me with a practical framework for reflection using concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation and active experimentation sections.

This will help evaluate my knowledge performance against standards while also allowing feedback that can inform development within the care home setting. This reflective account aims to examine how learning from one particular case has impacted my role in providing high-quality services within the healthcare environment whilst meeting individual patient needs at all times.

Concrete Experience

The case I have chosen to reflect upon is an elderly gentleman named “Tom” who had recently been admitted into our care home. His family contacted us after his current living arrangements had become unsustainable due to complications from a recent diagnosis of dementia and mobility issues caused by arthritis in both legs. When Tom first arrived, he was understandably quite anxious as it took him time to adjust to an unfamiliar environment, which was significantly different from what he was used to with a limited support system at the beginning due to their restrictions during the pandemic period at that time.

As part of my role in providing high-quality service, I made sure we did everything possible within reason to make certain that he felt comfortable and safe while being provided access to all necessary amenities, such as appropriate clothing depending on weather conditions etc. along with things like tablets or laptops so they can keep contact members online or listening devices if needed among other measures based on individual needs identified initially when initial assessment forms were filled out before…
