1.1 Summarise how legislation, policies and codes of practice apply to and influence own work role.
Adopting a robust understanding of the legislation governing one’s professional conduct is essential. Several critical legal frameworks emphasise values like equality, inclusion, respect for rights, and anti-discrimination practices within work environments. These shape my role by stipulating standards and duties expected of me as I carry out my responsibilities.
Most notably, the Equality Act 2010 provides legal recourse against discrimination while advocating for fairness, regardless of age, disability status, race, and other factors (Government Equalities Office & Home Office, 2015).
The Human Rights Act 1998 reinforces that fundamental rights must be upheld in daily operations. Additionally, the Care Act 2014 outlines specific duties to ensure adults with care needs receive adequate, individualized support (Department of Health & Social Care, 2014).
Together, these acts introduce accountability through codes of practice and policies aiming to mandate inclusive, empowering practices in service delivery. For instance, upholding client autonomy relates back to principles within the Mental Capacity Act. Here, decision-making support should be provided without encroaching on personal liberties or choices (Ministry of Justice, 2007). Additionally, adapting to suit the unique needs of individuals with autism fulfils the intentions outlined in the Autism Act (National Autistic Society, n.d.).
Implementation of such guidelines remains vital to accomplishing responsibilities in an ethical, respectful manner that maintains dignity across all relationships – with colleagues as well as those served. As governed by relevant legislation, my approach must align with standards emphasising equality, empowerment, and human rights. Understanding these properly allows me to support others while being accountable to codes of conduct.
