1.1 Explain how infection prevention policies and guidelines can be applied in own work setting
In my work setting, infection prevention policies and guidelines can be applied in various ways. First, I make sure to adhere to proper hand hygiene practices by washing my hands thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitiser after handling any items that may have been contaminated. Additionally, I wear appropriate protective clothing, such as gloves and a face mask, whenever necessary when interacting with individuals who are potentially contagious. I also strive to keep surfaces clean by regularly disinfecting them with the appropriate cleaning materials for this purpose (e.g., bleach solution).
I also ensure that all medical equipment is appropriately handled in accordance with safety standards so as not to spread germs or cause further contamination of any kind. For instance, I use medical devices only when medically necessary (or at least try to avoid overuse), following the manufacturer’s instructions on their use. I also dispose of needles properly into designated receptacles designed for this purpose once used. I ensure that all tools are kept clean throughout the shift and report any broken or malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate personnel.
Moreover, I am mindful of my own health and inform the relevant parties (e.g., supervisors) if I display any signs or symptoms associated with a communicable disease, such as fever, chills, vomiting/diarrhoea, etc., to minimise the chances of its transmission to others in my work environment. To this end, I also ensure that I get vaccinated regularly against preventable diseases according to recommended guidelines from public health experts so that even if I were to contract an infection, it wouldn’t be passed on to anyone else while under my care at work.
I am constantly staying informed of the latest infection prevention policies and guidelines through educational resources (e.g., workshops) provided in my workplace or other reliable sources so that I can maintain a high level of awareness of the importance of following these practices, which ultimately benefits us all.
