1.1 Evaluate two different views on the nature of mental well-being and mental health

The biomedical model of mental health emphasises the biological and medical aspects of mental disease, regarding mental illnesses as disorders that may be diagnosed and treated with drugs and other medical procedures.

According to this approach, mental health disorders are caused by anomalies in the brain, such as chemical imbalances or anatomical abnormalities. The focus is on identifying and treating these underlying causes, with the objective of lowering or eliminating symptoms of mental illness. According to the biological model, mental well-being is a state of absence of mental illness, with individuals regarded mentally well if they do not have a diagnosable mental health issue.

In contrast, the social model of mental health stresses the significance of social and environmental factors in mental health and welfare. This concept sees mental health issues as the result of interactions between a person’s biology and their social environment, which includes variables like poverty, discrimination, and social isolation. According to this model, mental health disorders are produced by interactions between an individual and their social environment rather than by individual variables. The emphasis is on addressing and eliminating these social issues in order to promote mental health and well-being for all people. People are regarded as mentally healthy if they are able to live satisfying and fruitful lives, which is consistent with one definition of mental well-being within the social model.

Essentially, the biological and social models of mental health and well-being have opposing views on the origins and treatment of mental disease, as well as the nature of mental well-being. The social model stresses the role of social and environmental elements in mental health and well-being, whereas the biomedical model concentrates on individual aspects and medical therapies.
